Basketball
4A Women's Basketball
At the 4A Women’s Basketball State Championship, the Panther Creek Catamounts collected the program’s first women’s basketball State title, knocking off Lake Norman 75-65. Panther Creek junior guard Olivia Tucker was selected as the Kay Yow Most Valuable Player for the game and a 2023 NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Award winner. Tucker finished with 27 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Panther Creek reached the state finals for the first time in school history in women’s basketball wrapping the season with a 29-4 record overall. The Catamounts were the champions of the Southwest Wake 4A.
Also advancing far into the 4A Women’s tournament from WCPSS was Rolesville. Rolesville battled and beat Clayton, Gibbons, and Holly Springs before meeting Hillside in the 4th round, losing a close game 41-39.
4A Men's Basketball
Holly Springs advanced far into the 4A Men’s Basketball Championships, beating SE Raleigh, Hoggard, Panther Creek, and New Hanover before falling to Richmond in the semi-finals.
Wrestling
Women's Wrestling Invitational
The NCHSAA crowned champions at its Girl’s Wrestling Invitational, one of which is a WCPSS athlete. The two-day event culminated with competitions in 12 weight classes.
Alfa G. Dominguez Gutierrez of Cary won first place in the 126 lb weight class.
1st Place Match: Alfa G. Dominguez Gutierrez (Cary) 45-0, Jr. over Danielle Dennis (East Davidson) 13-14, Jr. (DQ)
Also placing in the 126 lb weight class was Tori Bland of Millbrook, who finished fourth.
This marks the final year the NCHSAA will hold the girls wrestling invitational. Beginning with the 2023-2024 season, girls wrestling will become a sanctioned sport in North Carolina, making the sport eligible to hold state championship competitions.
Swimming/ Diving
Men's Swim/Dive
In the 4A Men’s State Swim/Dive Championships, Broughton’s Wells Walker was the star of the men’s meet, earning Most Outstanding Performer honors while breaking two 4A State Meet Records himself and helping the Broughton 400 Free Relay team topple the all classification State Meet Record. Walker won the 50 Freestyle in 20.19 seconds, shaving three hundredths of a second off his 4A Meet Record time in the prelims and out-touching Ashley’s Sean Setzer. Walker also collected the 100 Freestyle gold, winning the event with a time of 44.64 seconds which tied the 4A State Meet Record prior to his morning prelim swim in the event. Walker swam the prelims in 44.57 seconds to break the 4A Meet Record set in 2017 by Broughton’s Jack Messenger, who swam the distance in 44.64 seconds.Â
Walker led off the 400 Free Relay for the Caps, teaming with Gus Wiggins, Wilson Tuttle, and Clem Camacho to touch in 3:03.63 and eclipse the all classification State Meet Record of 3:04.31 set by the 2022 quartet from Green Hope, Landon Lloyd, Colin Whelehan, Brian Farrell, and Michael Cotter.Â

Women's Track/Field
At the 4A Women’s Indoor Track/Field State Championship, WCPSS athletes took top finishes including:
Rolesville junior Joslyn Hamilton who finished 1st in the 55M race with a time of 6.92.
Hamilton also placed 2nd in the 55M Hurdles with a finish of 8.15 with Green Level’s Alexa Nestor on her heels at 8.16.
On the field, 4 spots go to WCPSS women athletes in the Pole Vault competition.

Cheer
The NCHSAA Cheerleading Invitational took place at the Raleigh Convention Center featuring routines in junior varsity and varsity divisions, as well as Gameday and Competitive Cheer divisions. The Tarheel Trophy, in its second season at the Cheer Invitational, is awarded to the top varsity team regardless of division in the gameday cheerleading competition.
WCPSS cheer teams were ubiquitous with top finishes for:
Willow Spring -2nd place – Small JV Gameday D1.
Millbrook – 1st place – Varsity Gameday Non-Building D1.
Heritage High School – 1st place – Small Coed Varsity Gameday D1 and 2nd place in JV Non-Tumble D1.
Apex, Millbrook, and Holly Springs swept the Small JV D1 division.
Leesville Rd placed 1st in the Varsity Coed D1 division. Leesville Rd also took 2nd place in the Large JV D1 division, with Broughton placing 3rd. Â
Wake Forest – 1st place – Varsity Non-Building
Apex Friendship, Panther Creek, and Holly Springs swept the Small Varsity Coed D1.
Middle Creek and Broughton finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Medium Varsity D1 competition.
