The inaugural flag football season has come to a close with the Wakefield Wolverines defeating the Apex Cougars 31-19 .

Both teams finished the season with a 7-2 record with both teams playing the region runner-up in their regions as the format was a double-elimination tournament.

Deran Coe, WCPSS District Athletic Director, had this to say about the two teams in the finals:

“As the torchbearer for future seasons, the inaugural champions, Wakefield High School, and their worthy opponent in the championship, Apex High School, have set the stage for a bright future for women’s flag football in WCPSS. ”

Girls flag football continues to sweep across the state as the possibility of the sport becoming sanctioned  by the NCHSAA grows stronger each year.

The success of wake county’s inaugural season has helped prove why the sport continues to grow across the state.

Coe also discussed the impact of the initiative on the students and staff involved:

“The pilot season of women’s flag football in WCPSS has not only left an indelible mark on the sports landscape but has also underscored the importance of providing diverse opportunities for student-athletes.”

Coe also commended everyone involved for making this new initiative a success:

“The success of this initiative is a testament to the dedication and collaborative efforts of everyone involved – from coaches,  athletic directors and athletic trainers to the young ladies who competed with passion and determination. Congratulations to all who competed and thank you to everyone who played a part in making the pilot season a success!”

Players, coaches, and athletic trainers alike cannot wait to see what is in store for girls flag football in wake county!
