Spring Sports Recap

The following district-wide information has been gathered through research and the schools submitted responses. If there is anything missing or that needs editing, please contact support@nasathletics.com. Thank you for your help!

Track and Field

Women's 4A Track & Field

At the 4A NCHSAA Women’s Track and Field Championship, Rolesville finished fifth with 40 points fueled by several top finishes.  Rolesville’s Joslyn Hamilton won the 100 Meter Hurdles and finished 2nd in the 300 Meter Hurdles. Teammates Jordan Rochester finished 3rd in the 100M Hurdles and  Londyn Atkinson took 4th in the 100 Meter Dash before pairing up with Akeirra Wilson and Moiya Sharpe to take second place in the 4X100M Relay.  NCHSAA 4A Results >> 

Men's Lacrosse

In the NCHSAA 4A Men’s Lacrosse State Tournament, WCPSS’ Middle Creek Mustangs advanced to the semi-finals after winning against Willow Springs 19-8, Pinecrest 8-1, and Topsail 12-1. The Mustangs fell to eventual state champions Cardinal Gibbons with a score of 3-1 in the Semifinals.

Women's Lacrosse

The NCHSAA 4A Women’s Lacrosse Tournament had several teams represent WCPSS.  Wake Forest outscored East Chapel Hill 14-10 and Pinecrest 10-7 advancing to the 4th Round where they met eventual Champions Cardinal Gibbons. Apex Friendship overcame Leesville Road 19-6 and New Bern 22-6 before meeting a common fate by Cardinal Gibbons in the 3rd Round. 
After a 1st Round bye, Holly Springs outscored Heritage 18-12 before coming up a couple goals short versus Chapel Hill in the 3rd Round.

Men's Golf

At the 2023 NCHSAA 4A Boys Golf State Championships hosted at Pinehurst No.8, Apex Friendship’s freshman Daniel McBrien won the individual State Championship after outlasting Providence junior Colin Salema in a playoff. Both players finished 36 holes at 4-under as McBrien went 66-74 and Salema posted 69-71. Both players parred the first playoff hole, but McBrien followed up with a par on the second while Salema bogeyed. 

Other notable individual finishes came from WCPSS athletes Kareem ElKassem of Millbrook and Luke Mueller of Leesville Road who tied for 6th place at 2-over and Charlie Price of Broughton who shot +3 to tie for 10th. 

In the Team Standings, Green Hope posted 13-over as a team in Round 2 and came up just two strokes shy of Pinecrest in the team championships.  Green Hope’s Shlok Jain carded a 72 in the second round to finish T12 alongside teammate Jake Lewis. 

Will Mitchell of Green Hope was awarded NCHSAA’s Sportsmanship Award for the 4A Championship. 

Broughton finished 29-over for the tournament for a 4th place finish.  Green Level and Apex Friendship also finished within the top 10, tying for 8th place with a 2-day score of 54-over.

Baseball

In the 4A NCHSAA Baseball Tournament, the Wake Forest Cougars played for the championship, forcing a decisive Game 3 before falling to TC Roberson.  On the way to the championship, the Cougars outscored Wakefield 5-0 and Fuquay-Varina 11-0 and held Hoggard and New Hanover to one run each. They finished the 2023 season 26-7.

Many other teams represented WCPSS in the tournament including Garner who advanced to the 3rd Round.  Apex Friendship, Fuquay-Varina, Heritage, Middle Creek, Millbrook, and Rolesville all won their 1st Round games.

Softball

Apex Softball Wins 4A Championship!

 A six-run rally in the top of the seventh inning paved the way for the Apex Cougars to top the Hickory Ridge Ragin’ Bulls 8-5 in Game Three of the 4A NCHSAA Championship Series. The win gives Apex its first softball state title and the first softball state title in Wake County history.
On the way to the championship, Apex claimed victory over New Bern 11-6, Sanderson 7-0, DH Conley 7-5, and Wake Forest 3-1 before defeating Topsail in the 1st and 3rd games of the Regional Series. 
They finished the 2023 season 22-8. Apex’s Alyssa Kaufman received MVP honors and Kathryn Curry was named a 4A Softball Sportsmanship Award winner.

Twelve WCPSS Teams in 4A Tournament

WCPSS was well represented with eleven teams qualifying to compete in addition to the State Champs, Apex.
Wake Forest and Wakefield went deepest into the playoffs both advancing to the quarterfinals.  Wake Forest beat Rolesville 9-2, Hoggard 3-0, and Cleveland 2-1 before meeting eventual state champions, Apex.
Wakefield beat Corinth Holders 7-4, Lumberton 3-0, and Garner 5-1 before coming up one run short in extra innings to Topsail.

Holly Springs and Garner both advanced into the 3rd Round; Holly Springs outscoring Pine Forest 17-4 and Richmond 9-7 while Garner beat Willow Springs 7-4 and Laney 4-2. 
Fuquay-Varina advanced with a tight win over Heritage 8-7 in  their 1st Round. 
Apex Friendship, Heritage, Middle Creek, Panther Creek, Rolesville, and Willow Springs all earned 1st Round games.

Wakefield Softball Conference Champs

Wakefield Softball News

Congratulations to Wakefield college commits:

  • Dayna Bland (pitcher) UNCW
  • Brooke Masingale (catcher) ECU

 

Wakefield hosted a 1st, 3rd, and 4th round playoff game for the first time in school history and set the following records…

  • Most wins in a season (20)
  • Pitcher Dayna Bland earned 203 strikeouts, most in school history.
  • First team in school history to advance of NCHSAA quarterfinals
  • Won first NAC-6 conference tournament championship

 

In addition to winning a lot of softball games, during the season, the team went to a local elementary school (North Forest Pines) to assist with carpool duty, and to read to the k-1st graders.

 

Men's Tennis

At the NCHSAA Men’s 4A Individual Tennis State Tournament, the Leesville Road duo, Brayden Hakerem and Alex Higgins, became the first Pride tennis members to claim an individual state championship. They defeated Jesus Espinosa and Jackson Davis from Hough 6-2, 6-0 to bring home the Championship.

At the 4A Men’s Dual Team State Tournament, Green Hope swept all rounds to become the 4A State Champs. They defeated Overhills 6-0, Millbrook 6-0, Panther Creek 5-2, and Cardinal Gibbons 5-1 before taking down Providence 5-1 in the Championship Round. 

In the Championship Round Green Hope #1 Aiden Xu won his match against Daniel Rohlman 6-3, 6-3 and Green Hope #2 Stephen Gervase beat Grant Patridge 6-4, 6-4. Falcon #4 Brij Bhatt beat Collin Cushman in a tiebreaker, #5 Neal Varadan beat Robert Garand 6-3, 6-0 and #6 Medeshan Muruganandam topped Dennis Kreikenbohm 6-2, 6-4. 

Green Hope finished 21-0 with an unblemished season and earned their second NCHSAA Men’s Dual Team Tennis title.  

Other teams representing WCPSS in the 4A Men’s Dual Team Tournament were Panther Creek and Leesville Road who advanced to the 3rd Round.  Wakefield met Panther Creek in the 2nd round with Panther Creek advancing while Millbrook fell to eventual champion Green Hope in the 2nd Round.

Women's Soccer

Several WCPSS teams went deep into the NCHSAA 4A Women’s Soccer Tournament.  Holly Springs triumphed over Enloe 2-1, Topsail 3-0, and Heritage 2-1 in the first three rounds before coming up one goal short to Ashley in the 4th Round.  Apex, Heritage, and Willow Springs all made third round appearances.

STUNT

Two WCPSS student-athletes are set to compete in STUNT at the college level. Bella Cathell, a senior at Green Level High, is the first STUNT athlete in Wake County to receive a college scholarship for the sport. She will attend St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. And Teagan Wright, a senior at Heritage High, will compete on the University of Kentucky STUNT team and will be attending the school on an academic scholarship.

In 2015, Wake County Public School System student-athletes began competing in STUNT, a sport that focuses on the technical and athletic components of cheer, including partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, group jumps, and tumbling.

The sport has grown rapidly ever since, being called the fastest growing sport in the nation for female student athletes.  Sixteen WCPSS high schools now field STUNT teams.
