Apex Friendship alum Indya Nivar is the third Wake County graduate to make it to the WNBA.

Nivar, who graduated from Apex Friendship in 2022, was named to the Atlanta Dream roster after being drafted in the second round with the 28th overall pick in the WNBA Draft.

As a senior at Apex Friendship, Nivar averaged 18 points. 8.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 3.5 steals per game. She led the Patriots to the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A state championship game, where they finished as the runner-up.

Nivar was a three-sport athlete at Apex Friendship, competing in volleyball, basketball, and track & field.

“It couldn’t happen to a more deserving young lady,” said Scott Campbell, Nivar’s high school coach at Apex Friendship. “She set that goal as a freshman at Apex Friendship and worked toward it every day. She’s a great teammate.”

A five-star prospect and the No. 20 player in the country, Nivar was named the Gatorade North Carolina Player of the Year in 2022 and was selected to the McDonald’s All-American Game and Jordan Brand Classic All-American Game.

Nivar committed to Stanford, where she played one season as a freshman before transferring to North Carolina.

As a sophomore, Nivar scored in every game off the bench. She became a starter for the Tar Heels as a junior, averaging 8.3 points and 4.5 rebounds. As a senior, she averaged 10.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2.7 steals per game, earning a spot on the second-team All-ACC and ACC All-Defensive recognition.

The Tar Heels made back-to-back Sweet Sixteen appearances during Nivar’s junior and senior seasons.

In 2022, Nivar won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2022 FIBA U-18 Women’s Americas Championship in Argentina.

Nivar is the third player from Wake County Schools to earn a roster spot in the WNBA, joining Kiara Leslie (Holly Springs) and Azura Stevens (Cary).
