FAQ

What do I need to do to play sports in Wake County? – Be Academically Eligible.  Register on DragonFly and be approved by the Athletic Director

Can 6th graders play middle school sports? – No. They may, however, apply to be a team manager.

Do I need to upload new paperwork for each season? – No, you just need to ensure that the uploaded physical does not expire during the current season. Physicals are valid 395 days of when it was obtained

What should I do if my athlete’s physical is outdated or expired? Email the Athletic Director after updating your child’s Dragonfly Account with up-to-date documentation; staff do not receive notifications when new documentation is uploaded and needs to be reviewed.

When Should I sign up for Dragonfly? – As early as possible

How is Eligibility Determined? – Eligibility is based on the previous semester.  Students must meet academic and attendance standards (see complete eligibility requirements here). Fall Sports – 2nd Semester of previous school year.  Winter Sports – Being with 2nd semester of previous year.  The semester changes over in January, so eligibility for basketball and cheer will be reevaluated during that time.  Spring Sports – Based on First Semester of current School year

How many absences can you have and still be eligible? – 14 absences are the maximum in the previous semester.  IT DOES NOT MATTER IF THEY ARE EXCUSED OR UNEXCUSED.

What grades are required to be eligible? – You cannot fail a math or ELA class; must pass 3 out 4 Core Classes in the previous semester.

What happens if I miss the deadline for signing up for sports? – Unless you have worked out special circumstances with the AD, you will not be allowed to try out.

Why does West Millbrook have deadlines for tryouts registration? – Every student must be checked to make sure they meet all of the eligibility requirements prior to tryouts.  Coaches need to have an idea of how many students are trying out.  Larger numbers may require more days of tryouts.  Many people wait until the last minute, and without time to check every student, some students would not get to tryout.  So, let’s be early and time!

Can I try out for 2 sports in the same season? – Generally, the answer is No.  You need to select the sport you want to try out for the most and stick with it.  This is sometimes a possibility when one sport may start tryouts later than the other.  This normally only happens with track in the spring.

Can we tryout for one sport one day and the other sport the other day? – This is not recommended. You have a smaller work sample for two different coaches. Again pick your sport and give it everything you have.

Should I keep a digital copy of my physical?  Yes.  Before turning in paperwork, you should scan it into a pdf.  There are lots of scan apps out there.  This will help as kids transition to high school and need physicals for summer workouts.

Do you have to pay to get into games?  Yes, the standard cost of admission to Wake County Middle School Athletic Events is $6.00 cash or digitally with Go Fan app.
