Can 6th graders play middle school sports? – No. However, they can serve as managers for sports. Also, the 2nd semester of 6th grade affects their eligibility for 7th grade.

Do I need to upload new paperwork for each season? – No, as long as the physical is within 395 days of when it was obtained

Do I have to create a new DragonFly account for each season? – No, this is done once a school year.  You will need to register for your child as a 7th Grader and/or 8th Grader.

When Should I sign up? – As early as possible. Pay attention to the Parent Memo, the Latest News, and Twitter for updates.

What if I sign up only for a fall sport, and my child decides they want to try out for a winter or spring sport?  You can add sports that your child wants to try out for as long as it is done before the deadline of that season. You will need to make the selection in Dragonfly and complete the Ticket to Play form for that season

If My child plans on trying out for a sport in each season can I check all of those sports while I am registering? – Yes

How is Eligibility Determined? – Eligibility is based on the previous semester.  Students must meet academic and attendance standards (see below). Fall Sports – 2nd Semester of previous school year.  Winter Sports – Being with 2nd semester of previous year.  The semester changes over in January, so eligibility for basketball and cheer will be reevaluated during that time.  Spring Sports – Based on First Semester of current School year. For more details, check out the WCPSS Athletics Webpage.

How many absences can you have and still be eligible? â€“ 14 absences are the maximum in the previous semester.  IT DOES NOT MATTER IF THEY ARE EXCUSED OR UNEXCUSED.

What grades are required to be eligible? â€“ You must pass 3 out 4 Core Classes in the previous semester.

What happens if I miss the deadline for signing up for sports? – Unless you have worked out special circumstances with the AD, you will not be allowed to try out.

Why does Heritage Middle have deadlines? – Every student must be checked to make sure they meet all of the eligibility requirements prior to tryouts.  Coaches need to have an idea of how many students are trying out.  Larger numbers may require more days of tryouts.  Many people wait until the last minute, and without time to check every student, some students would not get to try out.  So, let’s be early and on time!

Can I try out for 2 sports in the same season? â€“ Generally, the answer is No.  You need to select the sport you want to try out for the most and stick with it.  This is sometimes a possibility when one sport may start tryouts later than the other.  This normally only happens with track in the spring.

Can we try out for one sport one day and the other sport the other day? â€“ This is not recommended. You have a smaller work sample for two different coaches and that can backfire. Again pick your sport and give it everything you have.

I’m tracked out. Do I need to come to practices and games? – Joining a HMS Athletic team is a season-long commitment. Tracked out athletes are expected to attend all practices and games. If you need to miss practice or a game, please let your coach know as soon as possible. If you miss practice leading up to a game, you might not be allowed to play in the game.

Should I keep a digital copy of my physical?  Yes.  Before turning in the paperwork, you should scan it into a PDF.  There are lots of scan apps out there.  This will help as kids transition to high school and need physicals for summer workouts.

Do you have to pay to get into games?  Yes, the standard cost of admission to Wake County Middle School Athletic Events is $6.00. You can pay cash at the gate or buy the ticket online.
