Beginning Of The Year Message From The Athletics Director: 2026-27 SY
Hello Nighthawk Community,
I am excited to be entering my second year as the Athletic Director at Herbert Akins Road Middle School. As we prepare for another successful athletic year, I would like to take a moment to introduce myself to our returning families and welcome those who are new to our Nighthawk athletic community.
I am an active member of both the North Carolina Athletic Directors Association (NCADA) and the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA). Through the NIAAA, I have earned my Registered Athletic Administrator (RAA) and Registered Middle School Athletic Administrator (RMSAA) certifications, and I am currently working toward my Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) credential. I am passionate about continued professional growth and regularly engage in leadership training courses to strengthen our athletic programs.
Over the past three years, I have served as an Assistant Athletic Director at the high school level. My experience includes two years at South Fort Myers High School in Florida (my alma mater) and one year at Riverside High School here in Durham. In addition, I have worked closely with Lee County Parks & Recreation and Sports Development programs (Lee County, FL), helping to build strong connections between athletics and the community.
My background also includes coaching and mentoring student-athletes, as well as completing a two-year Athletic Department internship at Florida SouthWestern State College while earning my degree in elementary education. During that time, I gained valuable experience working alongside athletic administration and event management staff within a nationally competitive NJCAA program.
I have also served as a Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Huddle Coach at my previous two schools, supporting student-athletes in developing leadership, character, and purpose beyond the game.Â
Above all, I believe in the transformational power of athletics. Sports teach discipline, teamwork, resilience, and help create a sense of belonging for every student.
My goal at Herbert Akins Road Middle School is to build an inclusive, supportive, and high-quality athletic environment where every Nighthawk feels valued and empowered—both on and off the field.
I look forward to connecting with all of you as we begin an exciting fall season. Let’s make it a great year!
#GoNighthawkAthletics 🦅
Best Regards,
– Athletics Director: Will Holderfield, RMSAA
