Wakefield flag football coach Kyle Bayer has been named the Carolina Panthers Flag Football Coach of the Week.
As a result, the Carolina Panthers will donate $1,000 to the Wakefield flag football program, Bayer will receive a gift from Whataburger, and he will be recognized at a Panthers home game later this season.
Bayer is the first flag football coach to receive the award.
Wakefield’s flag football team currently holds a 16-1 overall record and a 13-0 record in the CAP 8A Conference. The Wolverines are outscoring opponents 31.1 to 6.8 on average this season.
Wakefield is currently ranked No. 1 in the 8A East, according to the NCHSAA’s RPI ratings.
Last season, Wakefield won the flag football state championship with a 20-6 victory over Ashley. It capped off a 27-0 season, led by Bayer.
This fall marks the first season in which flag football is a sanctioned sport by the N.C. High School Athletic Association. The first official state championship will be held on Saturday, Nov. 14, at Lenoir-Rhyne in Hickory.
