Tryout Information

Winter Sports Registration Closes on November 8, 2024. This will provide time for staff to review eligibility.

All 7th and 8th grade students interested in participating in athletics must meet the set eligibility requirements in order to tryout. WCPSS does not allow 6th grade students to tryout, but they may register to be a manager, if applicable; this expectation is determined by each coach.

Managers must complete the tryout registration form below & have a complete DragonFly account. After registering, managers need to email the coach directly to ask if there is a process for becoming a manager and learn if they need to attend tryouts or not.

STEP 1: Register for Tryouts on the WMS Google Form

The earlier the better! This form creates a list of athletes that the Athletic Director will use to review DragonFly and Academic Eligibility.

Fall Tryout Registration Form (Click) –The First day of Tryouts is September 3, 2024. Registration closes August 29, 2024.

Winter Tryout Registration Form (Click) — The First day of Tryouts is November 18, 2024. Registration closes November 8, 2024.

Spring Tryout Registration Form (Click) — The First day of Tryouts is February 24, 2025. Registration closes February 14, 2025.

Step 2: Update or Create a DragonFly Account

Create a DragonFly Account or update your existing DragonFly Account.

Schedule a sports physical, if a new one is needed (physicals are valid for 395 days from the Date of Examination).

• When registering for DragonFly use your child’s middle school graduation year.

• All eligibility & tryout communication will be sent to student WCPSS email addresses.
•  If there are issues communications will be sent through DragonFly.

• Parents: DragonFly does not alert anyone when new documentation is uploaded and pending review. During the summer time DragonFly is only checked once per week. If you have immediate concerns email the Athletic Director directly.

Step 3: Eligibility Review & “Approved to Play” Sent to Student Email

The Athletic Director reviews all DragonFly documents, student’s grades and attendance of the previous semester to ensure all eligibility requirements are met. If you are new to Wake County Schools, this process may take longer as we wait to receive records.

If a student is eligible, an “approved to play” email will be sent to student email address with tryout details.

Winter Sports: Eligibility will be reviewed in the new year, make sure your fall semester grades and attendance comply with eligibility requirements.

Spring Sports: Students will not receive an “approved to play” email until the end of Q2, spring sports eligibility is based on this 2024 fall semester attendance and grades.

What to Expect at Tryouts

Tryout DATES, TIMES, and DISMISSAL

• Winter Tryout Dates, November 18th-20th, 2024.
• Winter Tryout Times
  • Boys Basketball 3:30-5:00 pm
  • Girl’s Basketball
    • Studyhall in room 301 3:30-4:30 pm
    • Tryouts 4:30-6:00 pm
• Dismissal-DO NOT leave your last class early, wait until the carpool bell rings at 3:20 pm.
  • DAY 1 of TRYOUTS please go to the gym for attendance with coach before changing in the locker room.
• Boys Basketball Pick-Up Time is 5:00 pm, Girls Basketball Pick-Up Time is 6:00 pm. Transportation MUST be ON TIME!
  • Pick-up is located in the front carpool loop, there are NO CARS ALLOWED IN THE BACK OF THE BUILDING!

Important Notes:

• Check email daily and listen to announcements daily.
• Managers: You should have already contacted your coach directly to introduce yourself, learn the expectations, and learn if you should attend tryouts and/or practices. Direct all of your questions to coach.

What to Bring:

• Filled Water Bottle
• An Athletic Change of Clothes & Footwear

Final Team Rosters:

• Final cuts will be posted on your sports page on out athletic website (Make sure you know your tryout number)!
• Regular team practice times:
  • Monday-Thursday until 5:00 pm or 6:00pm. Late practices will be rotated WEEKLY.
  • Coaches may practice on Fridays, this will be communicated by the coach if they decide to do so.
  • Mandatory Parent Meeting in the Gym for athletes who have made final cuts. Dates are listed below and will be communicated by the coach.

    • Fall September 12, 2024 @ 5:15 pm

    • Winter December 2nd, 2024 @ 5:15 pm

    • Spring March 2nd, 2024 @ 5:15 pm.
