Millbrook’s remarkable 2025 season came to a close Thursday night at Kenan Memorial Stadium, as the Wildcats fell 21–0 to an undefeated Hough team in the NCHSAA 8A state championship game.
The loss ends Millbrook’s year at 13–1, marking the most successful season in program history, and the Wildcats’ first appearance in a football state championship game.
Despite the outcome, Millbrook’s defense battled throughout the night, and several Wildcats earned awards for their performances and sportsmanship.
Millbrook’s defense kept the Wildcats within striking distance for three quarters, repeatedly delivering stops against a Hough offense that entered the night averaging over 35 points per game.
Linebacker Quinton Cypher led all players with 10 tackles, added a forced fumble, and recorded an interception return — performances that earned him East Defensive MVP honors.
Defensive back Malachi Gilchrist, who was named East Offensive MVP, contributed three receptions and was recognized for his character and leadership as Millbrook’s Sportsmanship Award recipient.
Millbrook’s defense allowed just seven points over the first three quarters before the Huskies extended their lead late in the game.
The Wildcats began several drives deep in their own territory and faced long fields throughout the night. Quarterback Bryson Gray threw for 96 yards, connecting with multiple receivers despite heavy pressure from Hough’s defensive front.
Receiver Malachi Thomas led the team with five catches for 45 yards, while Taden Martin added two receptions and a 38-yard kickoff return that sparked Millbrook’s best early field position.
Running back Brilison McCullers fought for every yard, finishing with 25 on the ground against a defense that had allowed only 10 points all postseason.
