Millbrook’s Camryn Dysart and Carson Margulies finished as state runners-up in the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s 8A girls tennis doubles championship on Saturday, leading the way for Wake County Public Schools in the individual state championships.
Dysart and Margulies battled Hoggard’s Zannah Ann Roberson and Audrey Sica in a three-set championship match at Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center. After dropping the opening set 7-5, the Millbrook duo responded with a 6-2 victory in the second set before falling in a decisive third-set tie-breaker, 7-6 (6-2).
The Wildcats’ doubles team advanced to the championship with two straight-set victories. Dysart and Margulies opened the tournament with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Providence’s Natalya Wallace and Vivian Wu before defeating fellow Wake County competitors Alexis Engelson and Maren Hauge of Leesville Road, 6-0, 6-3, in the semifinals.
Engelson and Hauge earned their semifinal appearance with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 quarterfinal victory over Jordan’s Larkin Kindem and Maya Manikumar.
Panther Creek also reached the 8A doubles semifinals behind Samantha Barnes and Elizabeth Shvetsova. The Catamounts defeated Northwest Guilford’s Priya Rao and Valeria Paredes-Whalen, 6-2, 6-4, in the quarterfinals before falling to eventual state champions Roberson and Sica, 6-1, 6-2.
Wake County athletes make deep singles runs
Wake County Schools also had multiple athletes advance to the semifinal round in singles competition across three classifications.
In the 8A singles bracket, Green Level’s Leah Dickson pushed eventual state champion Baelyn Smith Roberson of Hoggard to three sets in the semifinals. After dropping the opening set 6-1, Dickson battled back to claim the second set 6-3 before Roberson secured the victory with a 6-2 third set.
Apex Friendship’s Caralyn Izod also reached the 8A semifinals, where she fell to Myers Park’s Lila Cheatwood, 6-1, 6-2.
In the 7A classification, Holly Springs’ Kayla Galik advanced to the semifinals after defeating Chapel Hill’s Ashley Cui, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarterfinals. Galik’s run ended against eventual state champion Juliana Castellanos Trujillo of Ballantyne Ridge, who won 6-0, 6-0.
Felton Grove’s Sophia Gloer added another semifinal appearance for Wake County in the 6A singles tournament. Gloer opened with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over North Iredell’s Lucille Caudill before falling to Northern Guilford’s Johanna Vu, 6-3, 6-4, in the semifinals.
Middle Creek represented in 6A doubles
Middle Creek’s Karina Medvick and Delany White also represented Wake County Schools at the state championships, competing in the 6A doubles bracket.
The Mustangs’ duo faced Watauga’s Addison Cohen and Poppy Summey in the quarterfinals, falling 6-4, 6-2.
