Fuquay-Varina High School dedicated its stadium field to longtime football coach Graham Myrick on Friday night.
At the end of the first quarter, a ceremony was held to recognize Myrick, his contributions to the Fuquay-Varina community, and to dedicate the field in his honor.
“Coach Graham Myrick dedicated decades of service to our students, athletes, and community, shaping not only champions on the field, but outstanding people off of it,” the public address announcer read during the ceremony.
Myrick was the longtime head coach of the Fuquay-Varina football team, spending 27 years pacing the sidelines at Bengal Stadium.
Myrick’s Fuquay-Varina teams won numerous conference championships and made the state playoffs for 17 straight seasons. In 1985, the Bengals finished as the NCHSAA 2A state runner-up.
During his time at Fuquay-Varina, Myrick compiled an overall record of 236-74-5.
“His leadership and dedication remain a vital part of our school’s history,” Fuquay-Varina athletic director James Mountford said.
Myrick’s career began in 1964. For nearly three decades, he was a teacher, coach, and also served as the school’s athletic director. He retired in 1992.
Fuquay-Varina sought permission from the Wake County Board of Education to dedicate the field in Myrick’s honor in August.
